7318 Model S20 Guide and Reference
About This Book
This book provides information on the 7318 Serial Communications Network Server. It enables system administrators to install, configure, and maintain a 7318 Model S20 on their Ethernet networks.

Who Should Use This Book
This book is intended for system administrators with some knowledge of Ethernet and TCP/IP who are responsible for installation and setup. You should be familiar with Ethernet, TCP/IP addressing, and Ethernet interface configuration.
How to Use This Book
The following overview briefly describes the contents of each chapter of the 7318 Model S20 Guide and Reference:
- Chapter 1, "Serial Communications Network Server (7318) Overview," lists the features of the 7318 hardware and software, illustrates some possible network configurations, and outlines all the functions of the front and rear panels.
- Chapter 2, "Serial Communications Network Server (7318) Installation," contains installation information for hardware and software.
- Chapter 3, "Serial Communications Network Server (7318) Configuration," describes the Model S20 default configuration file. Also included is a series of procedures for customizing the default configuration file to your system.
- Chapter 4, "Terminal Command Session," introduces all the commands that are available from the command session when it is configured for an S20 port.
- Chapter 5, "Using Modems and Reverse Telnet," discusses the use of modems with the 7318.
- Chapter 6, "Configuring Printers," discusses the use of printers with the 7318.
- Chapter 7, "Configuring the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Feature," discusses configuring and managing a 7318 using an SNMP feature.
- Chapter 8, "7318 Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)," discusses the use of SLIP and PPP with the 7318.
- Chapter 9, "Security," discusses the levels of security on the 7318.
- Chapter 10, "7318 Configuration File Format," describes the Model S20 configuration file format.
- Chapter 11, "7318 Standalone Console Operation," describes BIOS console commands for logging load events during loader execution.
- Chapter 12, "7318 Problem Determination," provides diagnostic and troubleshooting information and procedures.
- The appendixes contain conceptual information explaining Ethernet networks, wiring for serial devices and for networks, and data transmission. Information on specifications and connector pinouts can also be found. Finally, a command summary for the BIOS, a feature code list for the 7318, and a procedure for updating BIOS code are also included.

Identifies examples of specific data values, examples of text similar to what you might see displayed, examples of portions of program code similar to what you might write as a programmer, messages from the system, or information you should actually type. |
