The Performance Toolbox is a Motif-based application that consolidates AIX performance tools, including new color graphic performance monitors for AIX, HP, and Sun machines, into a toolbox framework so users can easily access tools that satisfy the following key elements of system and network performance tuning: monitoring, analysis, and tuning of system performance metrics to balance the utilization of fixed system resources. It consists of two major components: performance manager and performance agent. The performance manager component can be purchased for either a distributed or standalone environment. For a distributed environment, Performance Toolbox Manager - Network Support is needed. For a standalone environment, Performance Toolbox Manager - Local Support is needed. The performance agent component is contained in the perfagent.server fileset of the Performance Aide package which is included with Performance Toolbox.
The Performance Toolbox consists of three packages of which only two are installed depending on which version of Performance Toolbox is installed: Performance Toolbox Network or Performance Toolbox Local.
Performance Toolbox Network is used when one wants to monitor a network of systems from a single system. This version of Performance Toolbox is comparable to Performance Toolbox Version 2.1.
Performance Toolbox Local is used when one wants to monitor only the local system. The user interface for Local is the same as for Network, but certain functions in the Local versions will only allow monitoring of the local system.
perfmgr.common | Performance Toolbox Manager - Common Support
This package contains the commands and utilities that are common between the Performance Toolbox Manager - Network Support and the Performance Toolbox Manager - Local Support filesets. |
perfmgr.network | Performance Toolbox Manager - Network Support
This package contains the commands and utilities that allow monitoring of remote systems as well as the local system. |
perfmgr.local | Performance Toolbox Manager - Local Support
This package contains the commands and utilities that allow monitoring of only the local system. |
perfagent | Performance Aide
This package contains the performance agent component required by Performance Toolbox as well as some local AIX analysis tools. |
Stop Performance Agent Daemons and Utilities before installing another version of the software. If the performance agent daemons had been running then reboot the system after installation. OEM agents can be installed on HP and Sun machines by copying over the installation script to the OEM machine and running it.
Performance Toolbox 2.2 will not run on AIX Version 3.2. 1.2 Performance Toolbox is required for AIX Version 3.2.5 and Performance Toolbox 2.2 is required for AIX Version 4.1 or AIX Version 4.2. Configuration and recording files generated for Performance Toolbox 1.2 can be preserved and updated to be used by Performance Toolbox 2.2 on an AIX Version 4.1 or AIX Version 4.2 system.
The three performance manager packages will run on AIX Version 4.1 and AIX Version 4.2. However, the performance agent component is sensitive to operating system changes. Thus, the Performance Aide 2.1 is required for AIX Version 4.1, and the Performance Aide 2.2 is required for AIX Version 4.2.
