Packaging Guide for LPP Installation

System Management Tools and Applications Package

The System Management Tools and Applications (bos.sysmgt) package contains system management functions that are delivered with the base operating system. This includes functions relating to installation, system backup, error logging, and trace.

The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) is a menu-based user interface that allows users to perform system administration tasks. SMIT, which is optionally installable, essentially constructs commands and runs them in the background.

The License Management fileset contains the commands needed to activate floating user licensing for a system.

Network Installation Management

The Network Installation Management is a tool which allows administrators to centrally manage software installation in distributed environments using standard network interfaces. This tool supports remote installation of the base operating system as well as optional product packages. Additionally, operations can be initiated from either a central location ("push" install) or from a remote client ("pull" install).

This fileset contains software that is required to create a Shared Product Object Tree (SPOT) to serve diskless or dataless clients. bos.net.tcp.client

File System Quota Commands

This fileset provides the commands that enable you to establish, maintain, and report file system quotas.  
bos.sysmgt.sysbr

System Backup and BOS Installation Utilities

The System Backup and BOS Installation Utilities allow the user to back up the system, including the rootvg volume group and other user-defined volume groups. Information captured at backup time includes:
  • Volume group definition
  • Logical volume definition for each logical volume in the volume group
  • File system definition for each "mounted" file system in the volume group

This information enables the user to reinstall the system if there is a system problem or to replicate the system software or configuration on other systems.

Software Error Logging and Dump Service Aids

The Software Error Logging and Dump Service Aids provide commands for processing the system error log and for starting and formatting the system storage printout.

Software Trace Service Aids

The Software Trace Service Aids allow applications to capture a sequential flow of events. They also provide commands for activating and controlling traces and for generating trace reports.  

Approximate Disk Space Required

The System Management Tools and Applications package requires approximately 12.6 megabytes of disk space.

Special Installation Notes

After the Network Installation Management - Master Tools (bos.sysmgt.nim.master) fileset is installed, it must be configured using the nimconfig command.

After the Network Installation Management - Client Tools (bos.sysmgt.nim.client) fileset is installed, it must be configured using the niminit command.

Special Migration Notes

If you currently use file system disk quotas and want to continue using them on the system that you are migrating to, install the File System Quota Commands fileset, bos.sysmgt.quota.
